The goal is to create a detailed book about Jesus Rafael Soto, a leading figure in kinetic art. Soto’s work is characterized by its exploration of perception, movement, and the interaction between art and the viewer. The book aims to provide an in-depth look into Soto’s life, career, and artistic style. I undertook the responsibility of designing both the book’s cover and layout.

DESIGN THINKING

Jesus Rafael Soto was a Venezuelan artist widely recognized for his pioneering work in kinetic art. His career began in the mid-20th century, marked by experimentation with optical illusions, geometric forms, and kinetic elements. Soto’s artistic style often involves the use of simple shapes, repetitive patterns, and vibrant colors to create dynamic and engaging compositions. His artworks blur the boundaries between two-dimensional and three-dimensional space, inviting viewers to interact and engage with the art.

DESIGN MAKING

For the book layout, a simple sans-serif font, Inter, was chosen for its readability and versatility. Given the complexity of Soto’s artworks, a one-column grid layout was adopted to emphasize negative space, echoing the spatial qualities of his art. The vertical running headers on each page mimic the lines and movement present in Soto’s work, creating a cohesive visual language throughout the book. Each chapter is distinguished by a different color, inspired by Soto’s thematic use of color in his art. An image representing the chapter divider color is placed next to the chapter title, creating a seamless transition between sections. Large imagery is utilized to showcase Soto’s artworks clearly, allowing readers to appreciate the intricacies of his compositions.
